Wolf (狼) by Chyi Chin (齐秦). Chyi Chin, or Qi Qin is a Taiwanese singer famous for his love songs and soft rock ballads. This song is another oldie (it’s from the 80s), but it’s also a classic! A lot of Chyi Chin’s other songs are worth learning as well, including 大约在冬季, 外面的世界 and 夜夜夜夜. He rose to fame in China again recently after appearing on the hit talent shows ‘I am a Singer’ and ‘The Voice of China’.
With his long hair, and leather clothes, Chyi Chin is something of an icon. He had a rough childhood, and later converted to Buddhism around the time that this song was written. The song is about a wolf in the wild, trying to find a place for itself, and hoping for a better future.
I learned this song many years ago, and used to be able to play it on the guitar as well. The pace of the lyrics is slow and it’s a great song to just give your all, and if you’re feeling up for it, you can even try imitating some of the wolf howls!
Here are the lyrics in Pinyin, simplified Chinese characters and the English translation.
wǒ shì yī pī lái zì běi fāng de láng
I am a wolf from the north
zǒu zài wú yín de kuàngyě zhōng
Walking on the boundless wilderness
qī lì de běi fēng chuī guò
The desolate north wind blows past
màn màn de huáng shā lüè guò
The slow sand brushes past
I am a wolf from the north
zǒu zài wú yín de kuàng yě zhōng
Walking on the boundless wilderness
qī lì de běi fēng chuī guò
The desolate north wind blows past
màn màn de huáng shā lüè guò
The slow sand brushes past
wǒ zhǐ yǒu yǎo zhe lěng lěng de yá
I can only bite my cold teeth
bào yǐ liǎng shēngcháng xiào
And give two long whistles in return
bù wèi bié de
Not for anything else
zhī wèi nà chuánshuō zhōng měilì de cǎoyuán
For the beautiful grassland in my dreams
